The Indiana Section Distinguished Service Award was initiated in 1993 to honor a member of the Section by acknowledging his or her extraordinary contributions to the Section and outstanding efforts consistent with the stated purposes of the Mathematical Association of America and the Section, namely, assisting in promoting the interests of, and improving education in, the mathematical sciences in America, especially at the collegiate level.
This year's recipient earned his Bachelor's degree from Notre Dame, his Master's and Doctorate's degrees from the University of Michigan. He has been an active member of the section since 1987.
This year's recipient is well-known both on his home campus and within the section. He has served the section on various committees, and as Vice Chair and Chair. He regularly coordinates transportation enabling undergraduates from his home institution to attend the section meetings. He has also distinguished himself with his service to his home institution. He has served as Chair of his department for nine years, and has taken the helm of the Actuarial Science program. He has coordinated administration of the Putnam examination for more than fifteen years.
This year's Indiana Section of the Mathematical Association of America Award for Distinguished Service goes to Patrick Sullivan of Valparaiso University.
