Indiana Section of the Mathematical Association of America
Distinguished Service Award
Citation to
Billy E. Rhoades
The Indiana Section Distinguished Service Award was initiated in 1993 to honor a member of the Section by acknowledging his or her extraordinary contributions to the Section and outstanding efforts consistent with the stated purposes of the Mathematical Association of America and the Section, namely, assisting in promoting the interests of, and improving education in, the mathematical sciences in America, especially at the collegiate level.
Today I am privileged to be able to present the second annual Indiana Section Distinguished Service Award to an individual whose service in mathematics and to the MAA has spanned approximately four decades. The recipient has been an active participant in Indiana Section activities, having made presentations at Section Meetings in 1970, 1974, and 1993, and has served as our Section Vice-Chair, Chair, and Governor. His service to the MAA more generally has included making presentations at many national meetings, holding positions on numerous committees, and in particular serving as the Associate Director and Director of CUPM during 1963-1965.
Although 1994 will be the year of our recipient's retirement as Professor from Indiana University, where he has lead a distinguished career as a mathematician and mathematics educator, we expect no decrease in his future professional contributions.
I am very pleased to present this award to Billy E. Rhoades of Indiana University.
