Spring 2022 Section Chair Statement

Original Posted on 3/14/2022 to the Indiana Section Community on MAA Connect:

Dear Indiana MAA Colleagues,

Lots has happened since the last Section Chair's Statement!  Most importantly, we have restarted in-person Section Meetings.  The annual Spring Meeting will be Saturday, April 9, at Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Indiana.  The plenary speaker will be Talithia Williams, Associate Professor of Mathematics at Harvey Mudd College, and the Section NExT Panel discussion will be on Mentoring Undergraduates.  The section's Distinguished Teaching Award and Distinguished Service Award will be presented at the conference and we will have our annual business meeting.

Regular registration is open now through Wednesday, March 23rd.  The regular registration rate ($25) applies to everyone EXCEPT students, high school teachers, retired and unemployed participants, and non-mathematician guests, who may each register for free.  Lunch may be added for an additional $10 until March 23rd.

For undergraduates, we are once again hosting in person the "Friendly" Indiana Collegiate Mathematics Competition (ICMC), which will take place Saturday morning of the conference.  To help the organizers plan for how many teams will be participating in this event, all teams must register by no later than Friday, April 1st. The cost is $20 for each team of up to 3 students.

Please consider giving a talk!  The deadline for submission is also Wednesday, March 23rd. You can see more details about the spring meeting at our section website.

The next important thing to mention is some changes in the Executive Board.  Bir Kafle and Mindy Capaldi have unfortunately had to prematurely step down as Section Chair and Congress Representative, respectively.  We thank them profoundly for their service!  Bir has been succeeded by myself as Section Chair, while Livia Hummel has been chosen by the Board to succeed as Vice Chair.  Matt DeLong will continue as Past Chair.  At the business meeting, we will vote on whether to approve of the three of us serving for another full year after our current terms are completed this summer.  Please attend so that we can vote on these and other positions!  We have submitted a nomination to the MAA Congress to succeed Mindy, and we hope to announce this at the business meeting as well.

Profound thanks also to the other members of the Executive Board:   Katie Ansaldi, Treasurer; Ranjan Rohatgi, Secretary; Colin McKinney, Student Activities Coordinator; and Stacy Hoehn, Public Information Officer.  Thanks also to Katie Ansaldi serving as our Outreach Coordinator, Amber Russell and Justin Lambright leading Indiana's Section NExT, Adam Coffman editing meeting abstracts, and everyone else who has served on a committee or helped out in any way!  We couldn't have navigated the last few years without the time and energy that you all volunteer to the Indiana MAA.

At the business meeting we will also be voting on revised bylaws for the section which will bring us up to date with current MAA practices and requirements.  The text of the proposed revisions is attached to this message.  Thanks very much to Matt DeLong and the rest of the committee which has been working on this!  I am sure the committee members will be happy to answer any of your questions at the business meeting.

Our section welcomes your feedback.  Feel free to contact me at holden@rose-hulman.edu or Livia at hummell@uindy.edu.  For further updates and announcements, keep following us on MAA Connect, our webpage, on Facebook, or on Twitter at @indianaMAA. We look forward to seeing you at Indiana Wesleyan!

Josh Holden, Chair of the Indiana Section of the MAA
